Friday Favorites: March 4, 2016 Edition
So is it me or was the Oscar buzz this year a little quieter than usual? Oh sure, I heard all about the diversity drama . . . but I'm talking about the DRESSES. I didn't see any that made me briefly regret my common sense college major in lieu of the Hollywood life. Unlike Stacey, I'm not a big movie lover, so my yearly tradition is to ignore the awards and the movies and buy the magazine the following week so that I can check out the dresses. But that ritual was a big yawn this year.
I do have a few movie favorites, though, and I agree with a couple of Stacey's choices (namely, The Princess Bride; for us, it's almost part of the culture of the church we attend. "Welcome, new members! If you have not seen The Princess Bride, we will have a special showing just for you later this week. After the viewing, you'll receive a copy of our photo directory and a coffee mug.") Not really. But close.
So here are a handful of my favorites--beginning with my all-time favorite:
Make fun all you want--I won't even get offended. Every blessed time the Captain says, "You've brought music back into the house. I'd forgotten." I swoon. I'm getting a lump in my throat right this very minute, and I am not even kidding. I adore the whole thing. (And yes, I realize it's very long . . . I will admit that I was 19 years old before I even saw what comes after the wedding scene because I couldn't stay up that late.)
While we're on the subject of my more serious movie choices, I'll go ahead and tackle this one:
Don't watch this movie when you're even remotely singing the blues because you WILL cry, but it is one of the most beautiful movies (and a true story) that you'll ever see. And here's the advantage to being a picky movie-watcher: I have never seen Anthony Hopkins as a villain. Never. So in my heart, he's CS Lewis--or Jack--and he's charming and delightful and not at all scary. I saw this in the mid-90s, and I still adore the soundtrack.
And speaking of love, I do love a good romantic comedy; here are my favorites:
While You Were Sleeping . . . it's everything you want in a Friday night movie: warm, romantic, hilarious, quirky, and all about family and happy endings.
I was pleased to see that the romantic hero in this movie is a PASTOR! And Hollywood portrayed him as smart, fun, interesting, and normal . . . not a weird cult-like caricature. (One point for Hollywood . . . Christians CAN be normal.) I also love the subtle but clear pro-life stance (some abstinence messages also).
And because I have little ones, I'd be remiss if I didn't choose one favorite animated movie. While I love the princess ones, I find that this one speaks to me the most:
I saw this when, right after my second wedding anniversary, my husband was sent overseas for a year. God spoke to me through a little blue cartoon fish who told me to "just keep swimming." I love everything about this movie (and I can't wait 'til the sequel comes out this summer). I MAY have already bought several packs of Nemo paper plates for our beach trip this summer.
Other honorable mentions: Two Weeks Notice ("I don't know how you can sleep at night!" "Well, I have a machine that simulates the sound of the ocean."), Mr. Holland's Opus, You've Got Mail, French Kiss (another great soundtrack), and I would be lying if I say that I don't watch at least five minutes of Hitch every time it's on TV.
Forget the Oscar winners . . . let's enjoy the cheese!

Friday Favorites: January 29, 2016 Edition
Stacey:
While winter seems to be a wee bit PMS-y lately here in the south, we are full speed ahead in our home with the comfort foods of the season. I am all about some soup! Aside from Campbell's Tomato accompanied by a few cold cheese cubes, these two have become my two new favorites. Of course, I found both of them on Pinterest while searching for delicious new noshes. Both were HUGE successes with the whole family--yes, even the kids--'cause picky eating has never been an option in our house.
Both soups made enough to have leftovers and reheated beautifully! YUM. YUM. YUM.
The third is an ah-mazing dessert. Now, if you aren't all that savvy in the kitchen, don't freak when you look at the picture and think, "Woman is nuts!" Seriously, I've never made a dessert this quick and easy that tasted so good! It's awesome . . . not on any diet plan you may have for the new year, but c'mon, life is too short to miss out on this one!
I call these three faves: soups and sweets! Enjoy!

This week, I'm going to take a break from complaining about the cold (both the temperature outside and the infection that has taken up permanent residence in my bod for the winter) . . . I still can't believe that I used up a favorite slot last week on tissues, but I still stand by my choice. Thanks, Puffs, for providing just a little bit of solace.
Stacey and I are on the same wavelength this week: I, too, am enjoying some comfort food. I'm a cheese lover, but I've never been a fan of pimento cheese. But about two years ago, my husband ran across a recipe that made me change my mind. About once a month, our daughter would sweet-talk Daddy into making a batch. There's a lot of grating involved, so it's not a quick thing to throw together. One day, he came strolling in from Publix with this:
Store-bought pimento cheese. I know. I almost didn't even give it a chance, but this kind is made in Pawley's Island, and I do love to support businesses in the Carolinas. My man urged me to try it on toast, so the next morning, we toasted bread in the toaster oven on both sides, and then for the last few seconds, we added a thin layer of this cheese (okay, that's a big story--we glopped it on like it was our JOB)--got it a little melty. That night when we got into bed, he said, "Tomorrow morning we get to have another PC!" I haven't had my cholesterol checked lately, so my fingers are crossed about that, but for now, breakfast is a little brighter. (My little girl still politely declines this version.)
While we're discussing indulgences, another of mine is good music. I get into music ruts here and there, and I was in a big one a couple of months ago. Then I discovered this CD:
I enjoyed her music when she sang under the name Watermark, but this CD is just amazing. I love every song, and it's a big bonus when you hear your five-year-old sing, "Worthy is the Lamb!" in the back seat . . . so beautiful.
My last favorite for the week is a store:
I was in there earlier this week. I came home and declared to my husband, "Soma is Victoria's ladylike big sister." He replied, "So now you're too uppity to shop at Victoria's Secret anymore?" Well . . . yeah . . . but he doesn't have to be such a brat about it.
Actually, I'm not saying that I'll never shop at VS again; I mean, there may come a time in my 40s when I may want a pair of panties that say "Text Me" across the back--but for now, Soma is my girl. So far I've splurged on the softest panties I've ever owned (and I'm as picky about my undies as my daughter is about her pimento cheese) and a couple of foundational garments (which I abhor, but they're a necessary evil of today's social norms--and if you have to wear them, you might as well get good ones). I haven't bought any pajamas or clothes yet, but trust me, those purchases are in my future. The store is quiet and nicely decorated, and the customer service is excellent.
Hope you all have a great weekend filled with soft clothes, soft music, and great food!

Friday Favorites: November 13, 2015 Edition
From the “I’m thankful for” posts on Facebook, to the fact that all of the grocery stores have cream of mushroom soup on sale, it’s dawning on me that Thanksgiving is sneaking up on us. This week, we’re sharing a few holiday-related favorites that we think you’ll enjoy!
Andrea’s Favorites:
Christmas Novellas
No matter where you stand on Christmas decorating (for the record, every year I firmly state that we will decorate on December 1 and not before . . . and my husband cheerfully ignores me and decorates the day after Thanksgiving)—if you want to have time to get a few Christmas reads in, you’ve gotta start early. I generally start reading these little gems around the beginning of November. Here are three of my favorites:
The Christmas Bus by Melody Carlson
I read this one a couple of years ago, and several days after the book had ended, I was still waking up thinking of my book friend Edith. When you get a “book hangover” like that, you know that you’ve read a great one.
Finding Father Christmas and Engaging Father Christmas by Robin Jones Gunn
In the second novel, a character tells the protagonist, "You are a woman drawn to home and hearth. Never doubt the happiness such simplicity can bring you." That quote sums up my life so beautifully right now.
Nail Polish
Penny Talk by Essie
I absolutely love this color for fall. The coppery tone makes me think of glorious trips through the mountains. It also has a hint of sparkle that could take you right into the Christmas season. Now, I love a good dark red for Christmas, but if your hands are as non-stop as mine, then your nails will absolutely chip, and a chip in this color is much less noticeable than it would be with red nails. The best part is that the sparkle is subtle enough that you can wear it to church and not give the impression that you’re heading to Vegas later.

Southern Plate’s Faux Pecan Pie
Basically, this is a pecan pie minus the pecans. I made this last Thanksgiving, and I did something that every good southern woman would tell me never to do: I made it for the first time on Thanksgiving. No trial run. Thankfully, my people devoured it, and no one could tell that it wasn’t traditional pecan pie (‘til I told them and made them guess the secret ingredient)! This one has sealed its place in my holiday season repertoire.

Pampered Chef Mix ‘N Chop
Okay . . . just get this. I love mine so much that it became the muse for a few themed gift baskets we gave as Christmas gifts one year.
I thought of all the items I'd purchased from mostly direct sales companies, and realized that I had one from each that I totally loved. Soooo, we assembled baskets of "our favorites we'd love to share with you!" One of these was included in each, and they have been huge hits among recipients. I just love it!
Vacation Souvenir Ornament
I ran across this of course while cruising "the Pinterest." I tucked it away and even shocked myself by remembering to actually DO IT! While on vacation with my extended family, I scooped a bit of sand into a baggie and tossed it into the back of car. Again . . . very pleased to have kept up with it and in turn make ornaments for each family. Just a fun, sweet, sentimental token.
Homemade Butter (great family activity)
As Thanksgiving is nearly upon us, this is one of those sweet remembrances I come back to year after year. If you've never made homemade butter with a child—well, you have never lived.
Okay, maybe an overstatement, but nevertheless . . . fun!
Every year that I was teaching, I did this with my kindergarteners around this time of year. Of course, it has become harder to find glass baby food jars, but if you're tenacious enough, you can do it. The short and sweet: heavy cream, a pinch of salt, and a heck of a lot of shake-shake-shake! Get yourself some corn muffins, and yummers!

Friday Favorites: November 6, 2015 Edition
Friday is a HUGE deal at our house. Even when my children were toddlers, I would talk up Friday to them as the glorious day when Daddy would arrive home around 5:30—usually with a pizza—and prepare to spend two whole office-free days with us. They got into the habit of calling any day off a “staying day,” and we all use that fun term now.
So Friday is the perfect day of the week for Stacey and I to share our favorites—anything we like that we think you may like too (especially if it makes your life easier or sets you up for some kind of instant success). We’ll be talking books to beauty products to bean dip recipes (we have a deep fondness for Tex Mex). Hope you enjoy!

Bible Hi-Gliders
I wish I had discovered these several Bibles ago. I’m a big fan of taking notes and highlighting, and this kind doesn’t bleed through. I’ve heard that some people color code their Bible passages—for example, yellow for the Holy Spirit, green for areas to grow, etc. Well, let’s never pretend that I’m one of those people. I go with the color that feels good in the moment.
Bats in the Library by Brian Lies
Sometimes I declare “Mommy’s choice” when we’re having reading time, and this book is always in my top five. I think this is one of the most creative and well-written children’s books that I’ve ever read . . . and I’ve read more than a few.
Clarisonic Mia1 Sonic Skin Cleansing System
Okay, I now see what all the fuss is about. At the recommendation of a gorgeous dermatologist with I-have-no-pores skin, I bought one of these last July. I used it for the first time the morning after I got it, and that night when I got into the shower, I touched my face and absent-mindedly thought, “HEY, why does my face feel so amazing?” Then I remembered! Now, I can’t say that I’m ready to post close-up pictures of my makeup-free smiling face all over the internet, mind you, but I can at least feel a difference.

Hands down, this is the best lunch box out there. Ours have lasted us over three years, and they’re still holding strong! I was turned on to these by a parent of one of my students (and a fellow teacher)! My kids love packing a variety of lunch noshes, and I love that it doesn't mean using a ton of plastic baggies or five different containers to wash.
Wilton Bake Easy Non Stick Spray
The holiday season is upon us, and trust me when I tell you that you need to get some of this stuff. It’s a baking game-changer! This is not your mother's Pam non-stick spray. No no, my friends, your baked goods will JUMP from their pans, so be ready!
Penelope Clear Cover 2016 Weekly/Monthly 5 x 8 Planner
One of my absolute weaknesses is the dollar bin at Target. I know it is a marketing trap, but it makes me happy. Anywho, every year I buy about ten of these and pass them out with great joy. I know most people use a techno gadget to keep their dates organized with brilliant dings and reminder notifications for important events. But there is something about authentic handwritten notes to yourself. I'm hanging on to those Lisa Frank experiences of days gone by!
Hollywood Fashion Tape
Okay, if ya got big boobs, they have no doubt gotten away from you from time to time. Such is life. One of my best friends gave me some of this miracle tape years ago, and I have never been without a pack since. It's perfect for those cute button-down blouses that gape between buttons like you've got two rabid animals trying to escape. Yeah . . . those. It also comes in handy if you're like me with no shoulders, and tops won't stay put over your bra straps. The struggle is real. So in the spirit of modesty—ironically--"Hollywood" fashion tape is the key!

I know most people use a techno gadget to keep their dates organized with brilliant dings and reminder notifications for important events. But there is something about authentic handwritten notes to yourself. I'm hanging on to those Lisa Frank experiences of days gone by!
Hollywood Fashion Tape
Okay, if ya got big boobs, they have no doubt gotten away from you from time to time. Such is life. One of my best friends gave me some of this miracle tape years ago, and I have never been without a pack since. It's perfect for those cute button-down blouses that gape between buttons like you've got two rabid animals trying to escape. Yeah . . . those. It also comes in handy if you're like me with no shoulders, and tops won't stay put over your bra straps. The struggle is real. So in the spirit of modesty—ironically--"Hollywood" fashion tape is the key!
